MISSA NEWS

Our season starts this week, with a handful of regattas April 10-11, including some qualifiers. Here's what you need to know:

COVID. We are proceeding cautiously, and hoping that we are able to have a complete season, including district qualifiers and national championships. A lot hangs in the balance of how the pandemic trends in the next month. All regatta hosts and high school teams should be following the requirements of their local and state governing agencies. This will likely mean that some teams may not be able to travel to some regattas, and while this is unfortunate, we have enough hosts and teams who are able to conduct events within the guidelines that we are proceeding with the season. Please read the NORs carefully  for any additional COVID-related requirements in place for each event.

SCHEDULE. The full schedule, including Notices of Race (NORs) and Registration links, is available on the MISSA website. Please check it regularly as things are fluid this year and regattas are still being added or re-scheduled.

NOR DEADLINES. For qualifiers and championships (tier 1 and 2 regattas), we will continue to enforce registration deadlines strictly, so please read the NORs carefully and make sure your team is fully registered on time. Many of those deadlines are this week.

PRE-QUALIFIERS. For the West and Central leagues, your Baker (team racing) pre-qualifier is this weekend, and Mallory (fleet racing) pre-qualifier is the following weekend. The East league will combine their Mallory and Baker qualifiers into the second weekend, but is splitting the event into two separate pre-qualifiers for Ohio and Michigan.

TEAM REGISTRATION. Also, please remember that to be eligible to compete in any high school sailing regatta, your team needs to be an active member of MISSA and ISSA. You can check the status of your school under "Directory". If the status is not listed as "Active," your team is currently not eligible. A status of "Pending" means that a team admin has made some changes to the school info this year, but that dues have not been received.

TECHSCORE. This is also a good time to make sure your team leader (coach or primary admin) has an active TechScore account. This is needed not only for regatta hosts and scorers, but also for every team to enter its Record of Participation forms at each regatta.

Let's have a great season!

Happy February!  As the temperatures hover around zero, it is hard to imagine that high school sailing could be coming soon. But hopefully before we know it, both the ice and the virus will be receding. Click here to see the email update sent out to our mailing list on February 6.

The HS Sailing Board continues to meet monthly to keep abreast of the national situation and attempt to plan our schedule given sailors can get back on the water.

See the schedule below:

  • Mallory (Double-handed Dinghy National Championships) - June 5-6, 2021 in Cleveland, OH
  • Baker (Team Racing National Championships) – May 22-23, 2021 in Miami, FL
  • ISSA will attempt to schedule the Cressy (Single-handed National Championship) this Spring – stay tuned.

ISSA has published the new ISSA Official Procedural Rules for 2021-2024 and these are being mailed out to schools registered in the 2020 year.  Please see this helpful guide: “Study Guide Version-Highlighting Changes”

We would highly recommend that ALL sailors and coaches review these rules carefully.
