Finally, this will mark my last weekly NESSA email.  I have served as Secretary/Treasurer on this second go-around since 2013 and it has been a privilege to work with everyone over those 12 years. In my new roles as ISSA President I look forward to continuing to strengthen High School Sailing not just for the top team in the country, but for all 650+ schools who are competing and getting kids on the water. Tim leaves some big shoes to fill, but I learned a great deal following HS legend Toby Baker and I am excited for the challenge.

Fall 2025 High School Sailing - F11

  1. NESSA Annual Meeting

    1. Date: Sunday November 16, 2025

    2. Location: BC High (150 Morrissey Blvd, Boston, MA 02125)

    3. Time: 0930 for Scheduling, 1030 for Annual Meeting.

    4. Information and Registration

    5. NB: 2025-2026 Dues are now $160/school

  1. Wrap up from the Cressy and ISSA Annual Meeting.

    1. Congrats to the NESSA sailors who deported themselves well this past weekend at ODU.  Full results:

      1. ILCA 6 - Girls - Perrin Mueller ‘26 (Tabor Academy) placed 3rd.

      2. ILCA 6 - Boys

      3. ILCA 7 - Open

    2. The ISSA board elected Rob Hurd (Cape Cod Academy) as the organization's 14th President.  Hurd became the first active coach since Stephen Leslie (St George’s School) in 1989 to lead the organization.  Hurd replaces Tim Hogan who has served for the past 20 years and led ISSA through tremendous growth and stability. Some policy discussions that came out of the AGM:

      1. Sailors must provide their own Red Flags for the Baker, NIT, and District Team Racing Championships.

      2. Rosters for ISSA Championships and District Championship can be amended up until 8 pm the Monday before the regatta.  This is an amendment to ISSA PR 4.1 (d).

      3. New USCG approved 50N and 70N PFDs are approved if they meet the USCG standards for wearable and have the USCG certificate printed on them.

      4. Other items discussed - coming from College sailing - to be discussed by the rules committee:

        • The college rule of 10 fleet races/division/day maximum and 14 fleet races/division/regatta for 2-day regattas.

        • Penalty turns for foul at windward mark to be done after off-set mark.

  1. From Matt at MIT: We have some very affordable sails that we would like to pass on to programs looking for an affordable upgrade. These sails have been used for the last 3--4 years at MIT but still have good life left as practice sails or for a program upgrading from older versions to the Zim platinum cut that is prevalent at college and high school venues.

  • 2022- 21 sets of Zim platinum mainsails and FJ jibs-These sails do not have outhaul slugs, a simple slug and shackle would allow these to be used with standard booms. Sold in groups of 6, $100/set if buying 6 or 12, $80/set if buying 18 or 21.

  • 2023-21 sets of Zim Platinum mainsails and 420 jibs-Normal clew slug configuration on these, Sold in groups of 6, $100/set if buying 6 or 12, $80/set if buying 18 or 21.

  • Both sets have had jib windows replaced once but are showing signs of age.

  • Sails are boxed and ready to pick up. Happy to provide some photos or stop by to check them out.

https://pcisa.hssailing.org/mailing-list - Everyone can sign up. Team Leaders (coaches, students & parent advisers) should sign up. Each team MUST sign up someone. Information distributed to this email list is Official! Note: Just because you are listed as an administrator in the PCISA Teams database does not mean you are automatically signed up for this email distribution list. This is a self-managed list that requires you to sign up (and/or remove yourself).

https://registration.hssailing.org/ - All teams must register online & pay annual dues before registering for events. Please read the "Instructions" carefully. Don't forget Step 3, "Save All Changes," and Step 4, "View and Print Invoice," which is actually a link to pay online. You can see a list of Schools and Registration Status at:

https://registration.hssailing.org/schools/directory-by-district/c/13/

Note: A status of "Pending" likely means that Annual Dues have not yet been paid. Allow at least 24 hours for a status update after paying dues. Get registration help at:

https://registration.hssailing.org/site/help

There will be a SoCal PCISA Meeting at SoCal #1 at NHYC on Saturday, Sept. 13th, and a NorCal PCISA Meeting at NorCal #1-2 at Richmond YC on Sept.27-28. Watch for specific times. The SoCal & NorCal Mtgs. are great places to ask questions, get answers, and discuss things.

A lot happens during the next few weeks with numerous deadlines and administrative requirements. Waiting until the last minute is not good for anyone. Please review the website, rules, and links above. If you are new, please reach out to previous team administrators, coaches, or other teams in your area for guidance. After you have carefully reviewed everything and asked locals for assistance, please let us know if you still require help with anything. The basic eligibility rule for high school sailing is stated in MISSA Rule 4.1: "Sailors must be full-time students in good standing in the 9th grade or higher, of the school on whose roster they are listed. Any exceptions must be approved by the MISSA District Director. By listing students on the official roster at hssailing.org, the team administrator is certifying their eligibility."

  • Home schooled students wishing to be added to a team roster must be approved by the new ISSA Eligibility Committee. Contact me directly if you have a home schooled student looking to join a team. The application deadline is September 1.

  • 8the graders may only be added to rosters in accordance with MISSA Rule 4.3. Rather than emailing for permission, please use this web form for each 8th grader you would like to add to your roster.

  • 7th graders and younger students may not be added to any team rosters and may not participate in any ISSA/MISSA sanctioned regattas.

PROPOSED SEASON FORMAT CHANGES
Since last year's annual meeting, the board had been discussing potential changes to the system of qualifiers used to determine which MISSA teams advance to the ISSA Mallory National Championship. The basic concept of a Gold/Silver series was shared through this email list back in May, and feedback was solicited by League Directors at local meetings, and by me through an open town hall meeting during the MISSA Mallory this spring. Based on feedback recieved in the spring, a subcommittee of your board has been working hard this summer on a proposal, seeking input from coaches and team leaders, and benchmarking best practices with other ISSA Districts.

While the proposed Gold/Silver system has many benefits and our consensus as a board is that would be a positive change overall, we decided at tonight's board meeting that more discussion, input, and lead time is needed to successfully implement such a significant change. For the 2025-26 school year, we will not be making changes to the Great Lakes/Shepherd Championships and Qualifiers Championships or to the MISSA Mallory Qualifier and Pre-Qualifiers.

Your League Directors will be reaching out to host Q&A sessions about the proposed new format, and setting up meetings at each Great Lakes Qualifier to discuss. In addition, I am planning oh having an informational meeting on the  topic during the weekend of Great Lakes Champs, which will be available by zoom as well.

FALL SCHEDULE
Our fall schedule is not yet fully set in stone, largely because we had hoped to roll out the new qualifier system but are now reverting to the old format. We are working  to finalize the key events in the next week, and once firmed up, the official MISSA schedule will be updated on our website. Our unofficial draft planning schedule is always visible at tinyurl.com/MISSA-schedule. Please stay tuned to more emails on this topic in. the next couple of weeks as we work to nail everything down.

LEAGUE CONTACTS
For all MISSA/ISSA related questions and concerns, your first point of contact should be your League Director. MISSA has four leagues, led by the following directors:
Northwest (MN, WI, SD, ND) - Sam Bartel race@lmss.us
Southwest (IL. IA, MO, NE) - Katie Tinder katie@sheridanshore.org
Northeast (MI) - Lynn Frikker frikkerl@communitysailingschool.org
Southeast (OH, IN, KY) - Jamie Jones jjone45@outlook.com

Additional board members include myself, Treasurer Jeff Hudson, and Directors-At-Large Whitney Kent and Mike McBrien.

Again, please make sure that anyone who wants to stay in the loop an all things MISSA subscribes to thiese emails here. More to come soon, thanks for taking the time to read this!

Spring 2025 High School Sailing - S17

  1. O’Day Wrap up:

    1. And that is a wrap on the 2025 NESSA Spring Season.  A very successful O’Day and per-mallory was held at Connecticut College last weekend.  The conditions were shifty and challenged the sailor both mentally and physically.  The Hotchkiss School ended up on top over Tabor Academy, St George’s and the Brunswick School.

    2. Hothckiss, Tabor, and St George’s will represent NESSA at the Mallory.

    3. Barrington HS, Greenwich HS, Fairfield Ludlowe HS, Belmont Hill, and Portsmouth HS (RI) will represent NESSA at the Phebe King Regatta.

  2. On the Horizon:

    1. In June, the NESSA ExComm will discuss two proposals for Fall sailing submitted by the subcommittees.  Information on those proposals should be published by Sept 1st.

    2. NESSA is slated to host the 2026 NIT and the 2027 Baker.  If your school, or organization is interested, please fill out the Bid form below. Deadline is July 1, 2025 with a decision to be made by Sept 1, 2025.

                       2026 NIT/2027 Baker Bid form

Spring 2025 High School Sailing - S16

  1. O’Day:

    1. Mallory & Phebe King: If you are attending the O’Day this weekend, NESSA needs you to have a conversation with your team regarding the Mallory and the Phebe King. Schools will be offered bids at the end of the regatta and should be ready to accept or pass on these bids at that time. If a school does not accept their bid to either the Mallory or the King, the next eligible school will be offered the spot.  This process will continue until all NESSA slots at the Mallory and the King are filled.  It is my intention to start asking schools at the awards ceremony.  Schools that have departed will be skipped.  We can’t wait 24 hours for schools to make up their minds regarding the next weekend.  So have those conversations now.

    2. Regatta Rosters need to be set by report time tomorrow (1200).  Tech Score is up, so feel free to start that process.

  1. Sail GP in New York June 7-8:  If you are headed to NYC for the regatta, ISSA has a discount code for tickets.  Email me for more info.

Spring 2025 High School Sailing - S15

  1. Congrats to NESSA schools (St. George's and Tabor Academy) who represented NESSA so well at the the Baker this weekend.   Also, congrats to Greens Farms Academy for winning the 2025 NIT (Founders Trophy).  Finally, congrats to The Hotchkiss School for winning the 2025 Rebecca Herreshoff Trophy.

  2. O’Day: Please note the following:

    1. The NOR & SIs are posted in Tech Score.

    2. St. George’s is responsible for bringing  the permanent trophy.

    3. As a follow up to NOR 1.5, please make sure to enter the names of ALL of your sailors (no less than 4, no more than 8) into Tech Score by the regatta report time. You can enter everyone as a "reserve": until you decide who is starting race 1.

    4. Also please note NOR 10 - FAILURE TO COMPLETE O’DAY FINALS. This section outlines the process by which schools will be selected to represent NESSA at the Mallory and the King IF, the O’Day regatta is unable to be completed before Monday May 26th.
This order is published here and on the website.

Spring 2025 High School Sailing - S14

  1. Herreshoff:

  • Congrats to the 16 schools that qualified for the Herreshoff at SailME on Sunday May 18.
  • The NOR and SIs are posted on the NESSA Website.

  • Greenwich Academy is responsible for making sure the permanent trophy arrives in Portland.

  • If for some reason, your school can not attend on Sunday, can you alert me by Tuesday so that a substitute can be found in a timely manner.

  1. O’Day:

  • Congrats to the 16 schools that qualified for the O’Day at Conn College on May 24-25.

  • The NOR has been  posted on the NESSA Website for a while.

  • The SIs will go up at the end of this week.

  • St. George’s is responsible for making sure the permanent trophy arrives in Portland.

  • Please take a note of NOR 1.5 “ISSA PR 4.1(d) is modified so that rosters need to be declared “at the report time of the regatta.”  This is a new ISSA PR that is in effect for the Mallory, Baker, and all district qualifiers.  What does this mean?  It means that all schools attending the O’Day will need to enter the names of ALL of their sailors (no less than 4, no more than 8) into Tech Score by the report time of the regatta.

  • Also note NOR 10 - FAILURE TO COMPLETE O’DAY FINALS. This section outlines the process by which schools will be selected to represent NESSA at the Mallory and the King IF, the O’Day regatta is unable to be completed before Monday May 26th.  This list of published here and on the website.

  1. Fall Sailing-ACCS:

  • On May 1st, the NESSA sub-committee issued their draft plan to revamp Fall sailing.  The sub-committee was formed to address the lack of access to many of the fall regattas and take a look at the qualification process for the Fall ACCs, an event that has gained popularity in the past few years.
  • You can read the draft proposal here.
  • The NESSA ExComm will be meeting later this spring to discuss the proposal.  Coaches with input can comment directly in the document or funnel those thoughts through their league representatives.

Spring 2025 High School Sailing - S13

  1. NESSA Teams: Congrats to all the schools that participated in the NESSA Teams this past weekend.  Special thanks to Gary Werden (Sharon HS) for pulling it all together.  It's a huge job and he made it look so easy.  Good luck to St George’s and Tabor who will represent NESSA at the Baker and to Barrington HS, Greens Farms Academy, and East Greenwich HS who will represent NESSA at the NIT.

  1. Fleet Racing:  This weekend, all eyes shift to the O’Day qualifiers (Saturday) and the Herreshoiff Qualifiers (Sunday).  Before your team shows up at your respective venues, here are some things to make sure you have done.

Make sure you know where your venue is.

                          O’Day Qualifiers

                          Herreshoff Qualifiers

Read the NOR and SIs (posted by Friday) which are posted on the website. They answer many of the questions you might have.  “Reading is fundamental”

Update your Team Roster in the Directory. Once a name is posted, it takes 24 hours for it to appear in the Tech Score database.

Check your Tech Score log in. Each school has one login, so check with whomever had it last year.  If you need to request a new account for your school, do it before noon on Friday.  The ISSA National Office in California is not open over the weekend.  What’s that old saying, “lack of preparation on your part is not an emergency on the part of ISSA.”

Do NOT leave your venue this weekend without checking with the event chair.  This will ensure that all of your RP info is entered correctly.  Failure to post proper RP info carries a hefty penalty (ISSA PR 4.3)

If your school can no longer compete, the deadline for withdrawing without penalty is 48 hours prior to report time.  That would be

0930 on Thursday May 8, 2025 for O’Day

0930 on Friday May 9, 2025 for Herreshoff

This is very important if your school is on probation.  The penalty for a second offense while on probation is purposely severe. (District Rules Article L)

  1. National Intersectionals:  SISSA has worked hard to expand the number of national events in an effort to allow more schools the opportunity to participate in regatta with schools outside of their district.   The NIT (Founders Trophy) and the Phebe King Trophy are two examples in the spring.  If your school qualifies for the O’Day, you need to start a conversation with your school, parents, etc about “will we attend the Phebe King if we earn an invitation?”  NESSA gets four (4) berths, allocated to the schools that finish 4th - 7th at the O’Day.  Schools that earn a bid should be ready to accept or pass on that bid at the end of the O’Day.  There will NOT be any “can I have 24 hours in check.”  The bid will automatically slide to the next school.  Due to the short time table between the O’Day and the Mallory/King, decisions have to be made that Sunday May 25th.  More information on the Mallory and the King is posted on the website. Questions, comments, or concerns can be directed to Rob Hurd starting on Monday.

That is a lot this week.  Good luck to everyone competing this weekend.

  • The deadline to withdraw without penalty from the Herreshoff Qualifier is 0930 on Friday May 9, 2025.

  1. Tech Score: There is an issue with Tech Score (both HS and College) that ISSA is aware of and working on.  The hope is to have it fixed by this weekend.  That said, it is advised for race organizers to have an “old school” paper plan in case things are not fixed in time.

  2. High School Sailing Survey. Please take a look at this request and forward it to your team members if you deem it appropriate.
My name is Kayla Johnson, and I am a senior at Mercy High School in Middletown, CT. I am reaching out because your school has an active sailing team registered with the New England Schools Sailing Association. I am currently working on my AP Capstone Research project, which delves into persistent participation barriers in the sport of sailing. By gathering information from schools across New England, I aim to uncover patterns that will inform the creation of informational programs and accessible opportunities to foster participation and support within the sport.

My data collection is based on a multiple-choice survey. The survey is 100% anonymous; no identifying information will be recorded or connected to students. Additionally, a branching format is used to ensure that the survey can be completed quickly and easily. No student will be asked more than 20 multiple-choice and 2 (optional) open-ended questions.

The survey is intended to be distributed to as many students as possible, regardless of prior sailing experience. Please let me know if your school would be willing to distribute the survey on my behalf. As many responses as possible are greatly appreciated and will make a significant impact on my research. I will attach a PDF copy of all the questions to this email for you to review. I will also include a link that can be used to distribute the survey. If you have any further questions or concerns, please let me know. Thank you for your time.

    Kind regards, Kayla Johnson

Spring 2025 High School Sailing - S5

As we all move towards the start of our seasons, here are three house keeping items to keep you busy.

  1. NESSA Spring Regattas: Registration is open until 2359 on April 1st.

    • Registration is not complete until regatta fees are paid.

    • You can pay for all three regattas at once by selecting the "All 3 Spring Regattas $110" tab or you can pay for each one individually by selecting the appropriate regatta tab.

    • Do NOT pay the "Teams - Attending fee $120" until your school has been selected for the Teams

    • Here is the link to the Spring 2025 Regatta Fees page.

    • Registration for the NESSA Teams is not complete until you upload the official NESSA Schedule excel document.  No other documents will be considered (It's how we tie the data into Carl's standings sheets).

    • When you access the schedule template:

      • (1) download it,

      • (2) fill it in,

      • (3) save it in accordance with the protocol on the sheet, and

      • (4) upload it to the NESSA Teams Registration Google form.

Questions, comments, or concerns?  Let us know.

  1. Database & Rosters: It's time to update your roster.  Three things to consider.

    1. Per ISSA PR 1.2 (a), " All competitors must be listed on the school’s roster in ISSA’s registration system, and only eligible competitors may be listed on these rosters."

    2. Per ISSA PR 1.2 (b), "All competitors must be full-time students, in the 9th grade or higher, of the school they represent, and subject to the academic and disciplinary requirements of that school."

    3. Per ISSA PR 1.2 (g): "Students attending a Member School may not combine with students from another Member School."

    4. 7th and 8th graders: ISSA Rules committee spent a lot of time this fall discussing the eligibility of students lower than 9th grade. See new ISSA PR 1.2 (c): “A District may allow 8th graders for development purposes. However, 8th graders are not allowed to compete in national championships, national invitationals, or qualifying events to national championships or invitationals.”

NESSA Interprets ISSA PR 1.2 (c) in the following manner.

  • No 8th graders allowed in the O’Day or Herreshoff or any of their qualifiers. This holds true for all fall qualifiers (ACCs, GOR, NBKI, etc) too.

  • By default, no 8th grader is allowed in any team race between schools submitting records for NESSA Team Consideration, however, coaches are allowed to make arrangements for 8th graders by mutual agreement.

  • Furthermore, it is understood that an 8th graders must attend the member high school; think schools like Belmont Hill that starts in 7th grade or Barnstable HS that has grades 8-12 in the building.  It does not include a school where the 8th graders were in a different school building in the district.

  • There are no NESSA limits on which sailors can practice with a team.

A complete list of ISSA Procedural Rules can be found on the ISSA website.  Hard copies are being mailed to each Member school later this month.  Questions on interpretation can be sent to NESSA President Chris Crane.

  1. Tech Score: Each school is assigned a Tech Score Account.

    • If you are new to your school’s program, please contact the person who controlled the account last year to gain access.

    • If that is not possible, click on this link and ask to be added.  ISSA processes these requests during normal Pacific coast business hours.

    • Once regattas start, Tech Score is the only way to update your school’s Race Participation (RP) info. See ISSA PR 4.3 outlines penalties.

That’s enough to keep you busy on a windy Friday.

New ISSA Procedural Rules Published

The Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA) has published new Procedural Rules (ISSA PR) to work with the latest Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) for 2025-2028. These are effective January 16, 2025, the beginning of the Spring 2025 Season.

A copy of the new ISSA PRs is attached to this email. They can also be found at https://hssailing.org/resources/rules/

Also, at the above location, you will find a "Study Guide Version" that highlights the changes that have been made.

All coaches, sailors, Responsible Team Adults, Race Officials, and others with active roles in High School Sailing should familiarize themselves with these new rules.

A significant change/addition is the new Appendix 1 - ISSA Code of Conduct

This Code of Conduct applies to ALL persons associated with ISSA Teams and Events.

A great deal of work has gone into this rewrite, the most extensive in well over a decade, in an effort to continue to improve the sport of High School Sailing!

A "hard copy" of these rules will be mailed to each ISSA Member School/Team over the coming weeks.

Learn and Enjoy!

Spring 2025 High School Sailing - S1

January 16th marks the start of the second semester in High School sailing.  While the wind and weather this week are not conducive to starting the spring season in New England, there are a few things to consider this month in anticipation of the season.

First off, as I begin to disengage myself from the role of NESSA Secretary/Treasure, I am going to start sending these email blasts from the NESSA Account and not my personal account.

  1. Procedural Rules: The ISSA Board approved the 2025-2028 ISSA Procedural Rules last night on our monthly conference call.  They will be posted on the Resource page of ISSA Website  by January 16th. Hardcopies will be mailed to all member schools in the next few months.  The rules have been substantially rewritten so everyone should get eyes on them before the start of the season.

  2. To that end, Dave Perry's Rules Seminar

    • Title: What’s New in the New Rules for 2025-2028, and Other Discussions on the Rules

    • Date: Monday, Feb 10, 2025

    • Times: 8:00 – 10:00 pm EST

    • Target participants – all ISSA Coaches

    • Platform: Zoom Meeting. The session would be recorded, and the link sent afterwards for anyone missing it.

    • See attached flyer for details.

    • One lucky school will get a free ISSA membership

  3. NESSA Spring Regattas

    1. NORs posted by February 1, 2025 HOPEFULLY. Please note that it took longer than expected to complete the revision of the ISSA PR.  Now that they have been approved the Rules Committee will turn towards a rewrite of the Fleet Racing and Team Racing Notice of Race Templates.  This might cause a delay in the posting of the Spring 2025 NORs for NESSA regattas.

    2. Registration opens on March 1, 2025

    3. Registration closed on April 1, 2025

Enjoy the weekend.  Perhaps take in the New England Boats Show in Boston.

[NESSA] Fall 2024 High School Sailing - F16

While it feels like the HS season has come to an end, here are a few things to consider as we move into the holidays.

  1. Good luck to Tabor Academy and St George's School who will both be representing NESSA at the National Keelboat Invitations this weekend in St. Petersburg, FL.  You can follow the results on Tech Score.

  2. Interested in being in Souther California in early January?  Check out the information on the Rose Bowl posted on the PCISA website.  Contact the host about attending if you are interested.

  3. The ISSA Rules Committee has been working hard to finalize the updated ISSA Procedural Rules for 2025-2028.  Those will be available online by January 16, 2025, the day that they go into effect as that is the start date for the second semester in High School Sailing.  The rules have been substantially re-written so everyone should get eyes on them before the start of the season.

  4. To that end,  SAVE THE DATE - Dave Perry's Rules Seminar

    • Title: What’s New in the New Rules for 2025-2028, and Other Discussions on the Rules

    • Date: Monday, Feb 10, 2025

  1. Tabor Academy secured the 3rd NESSA bid to the Fall ACCs this past weekend at the Fall Funfest for the Wally Gleekman Trophy.

Speaking of which, there is a Gleekman Trophy somewhere. Carl Zimba, past MBL President, purchased a trophy probably 15 years ago.  The trophy has been missing for a number of years.  Someone has it in their trophy case.  Past winners, please give a thorough review of your site.  You can see from the list that this trophy goes back almost 30 years.  It would be nice to have it back in circulation.

3. FYI: This from the ISSA National Office today.  Further updates by the end of the week.

ISSA is monitoring Hurricane Milton, which is now a Category 5 headed straight to Tampa, and scheduled to hit land Wednesday.   Depending on the severity of the storm, HS Sailing is monitoring if the Cressy will be able to be held at St Petersburg YC.

In coordination with Zim Sailing, ICSA and Old Dominion Univ in Norfolk, Virginia, we may have an alternate host and date of Nov 2-3 if necessary.

Hopefully we will be able to communicate the final decision by this Friday or Saturday, depending on how St Pete was able to weather the storm.

District Directors, - please pass this information along to your sailors who are currently qualified for the Cressy – we’ll try to keep everyone informed as best we can as we receive information.

[NESSA] Fall 2024 High School Sailing - F10

  1. Congratulations to Tabor Academy, who won the NESSA NKBI qualifier last weekend.  We delayed posting the scores due to a request to re-open a redress hearing.  The NESSA officers felt that the protest committee had made a "significant error" in not allowing others at attend the redress hearing as allowed under the US Sailing prescriptions to the Racing Rules of Sailing.  That reopening heard was held yesterday and you can see the results reflected in Tech Score.
The whole event is a reminder to all of us who run regattas that there are a lot of rules and regulations to keep track of and it is important to review them often.  This will become even more important on January 1, 2025, when we flip to a new set of RRS and new ISSA PR.  Often rules don't change, but sometimes they do.  Overall this whole experience was an educational opportunity, which is the business of High School sailing.
The National Keelboat Invitational is a 10-boat regatta with one participant invited form each of the seven ISSA districts and three at-larger invites.  NESSA has already submitted a request for consideration for an at large berth.  Hopefully, we will secure one again this year.

  4. Still room in some of the other fall regattas (Tabor Invite, Catholic Cup) coming up in October.  Check the NESSA schedule for more information.

[NESSA] Fall 2024 High School Sailing - F8

  1. NESSA Singlehanded Championship - Healy Trophy: The field is set for the Healy trophy this weekend at American YC in Rye, NY.  If you were a resume sailor, be advised that the NESSA VP has accepted all the resume sailors into the field.  Questions regarding the regatta can be directed to the Regatta Chair or Logistics Director - contact info listed in the NOR. Good luck to all competing. A reminder that Tabor Academy is the keeper of the Healy trophy is therefore has the Article M obligation to make sure that it shows up at the venue

  2. NBKI Quals is set to Sunday.  Thanks to the hard work at SailME, two additional boats were tuned up this week to match the fleet and expand the size of the field.  A reminder the deadline to withdraw without penalty from that regatta is 0900 on Friday Sept 20, 2024.

  3. ACCs: St George's School secured the second NESSA berth at the ACCs last weekend with a wire-to-wire win at the Arnold Brown Regatta on Martha's Vineyard.  For complete results, click here

PCISA Girls Invitationals:  The PCISA invites each district to send teams to their girls' event in Mission Bay each year.  If there is a school interested in one of the NESSA berths, please let me know by Sept 20th.  If more schools are interested then berths, the NESSA officers will make the decision as to who represents NESSA. Deadline is FRIDAY.

More information can be found here.

  5.

FYI. Information on the Catholic Cup is now posted on the NESSA website

NESSA] Fall 2024 High School Sailing - F7

A lot of information this week. Read carefully.

  1. Casco Bay Open: The first ACC qualifier was held in light winds at SailME.  Barrington HS out performed the other 16 schools to win the Casco BAy Open and earn the first of four NESSA berths to the Fall ACCs.  For complete results, click here

  2. Race Participation forms.

    1. It is the responsibility of the Coach to make sure that the Race Participation (RP) form is filled out properly. To quote the ISSA PR 4.3 (a)  “In dinghy events, teams failing to complete the Record of Participation Form before the expiration of Protest Time Limit at the end of the regatta shall have 20 points added  to their team score for each division with incomplete forms by the Regatta Chair.”  You will see that four schools were dinged for this last weekend.  This has been a requirement for years and frankly, we all need to do a better job of it.  If you are confused on how to correctly fill out an RP form in Tech Score (and I will admit it is not the easiest thing to do for a first time coach), please ask your regatta host or the NESSA Rep for help. Never leave a venue until that is done.

    2. It was pointed out to me that the RP info on Tech Score has been upgraded this year (thank you Chris Staw for recognizing this). Each sailor is now hyperlinked. If you click on their name, you can see all the other events that they have done. Pretty cool.

  3. Great Oaks Regatta Quals:  There will be two qualifiers for the Great Oaks Regatta this year - Saturday Oct 19th and Sunday Oct 20th. This is in an effort to allow more schools the opportunity to compete.

    1. If 9 or less schools register, regatta will be one day

    2. If 9 or more schools register,

      • The first 9 schools to register will compete on day 1.  At the end of the day, the top 2 schools will qualify for the Great Oaks Regatta.

      • Schools that finish 3-5 can come back on day 2 with the next 6 schools who register.  If schools 3-5 pass on the opportunity to compete on day 2, the first school(s) on the waitlist will be invited. At the end of the day, the top  school will qualify for the Great Oaks Regatta.

As a reminder, the GOR quals are only open to schools that have not qualified for the Mallory or the Baker in the past four years.  A complete list of those schools illegible is listed in the NOR. The NOR is posted and registration is slated to open at noon on Friday Sept 13th.

  1. PCISA Girls Invitationals: The PCISA invites each district to send teams to their girls event in Mission Bay each year.  If there is a school interested in one of the NESSA berths, please let me know by Sept 20th.  If more schools are interested then berths, the NESSA officers will make th4 decision as to who represents NESSA.

More information can be found here.

  1. Regatta Fees.

    1. Regatta fees for the Healy and the NBKI should be paid this week through the NESSA PayPal Portal.

    2. Once I receive notice of payment, I update it on the entries list page.

    3. Schools on the Waitlist for the NBKI need not submit payment at this time.

    4. Schools that register for the GOR Quals should submit payments over the weekend.

    5. Information on how to pay Regatta Fees for other regattas (Arnold Brown, Fall Funfest, Duxbury Invite, Tabor Invite, Roy Williams, etc) can be found in the NORs for those events.

  2. Home Schooled and Remote Schools: Over the summer, an ISSA subcommittee re-worked the home school rule in the ISS PR 1.2 Competitors.  The full text is below.  The goal was to provide some consistency nationally and to make sure that what is being allowed in the South East, is the same as the West Coats, is the same as New England.  The ISSA Eligibility Committee has met twice already this fall and have made about 24 decisions. We will meet once more after the Sept 15th deadline and again in December/January before the Spring Season.  If you are a homeschool/Remote School student, your first course of action is to contact the NESSA District Director.  Deadline for fall consideration is Sept 15th.

ISSA Procedural Rule 1.2 COMPETITORS:

(d) Homeschooled and Remote Students

(i) Homeschooled and remote students are defined as those who are not enrolled in classes at a traditional school.

(ii) If permitted by state and/or local public-school policies and laws, homeschooled or remote students may apply to the ISSA Eligibility Committee for consideration to be assigned to a school within their school district.

e) Students attending a school with no co-curriculars and a formal agreement allowing their students to participate in another school's interscholastic athletic program may apply to the ISSA Eligibility Committee for consideration to be assigned to a school within their school district.

That’s enough for today.  Enjoy the nice weather.

[NESSA] Fall 2024 High School Sailing - F6

Registration for several Fall regattas (Arnold Brown, NKBI, Healy, Fall Funfest, & Duxbury Fall) opened at noon today and the registrations are flooding in.

Registration for the Roy Williams at SG opens at 9 am 9/9.

NORs for the NESSA GOR Qualifier and for the Tabor Fall Invite will be posted soon.

A reminder that you need to be an "active" member to register for any high school regatta.

The First ACC qualifier  (Casco Bay Open) is this weekend at SailME.  Participating schools must:

  • be active members for 2024-2025

  • Have all active sailors listed in their ISSA/NESSA Database

  • Check their Tech Score credentials.

Many of these things must be done at least 24 hours before report time in order for both databases to "shake hands" before the regatta.  Furthermore, a reminder that the ISSA office in California is closed for the weekend, so at 0900 on Saturday there will be no one to help you troubleshoot.

2024 PCISA NorCal & SoCal Series’

The race documents and entry forms are available for PCISA SoCal #1 at Newport Harbor YC and the PCISA NorCal #1 and NorCal #2 at Richmond YC.

B. Fall 2024 Regatta Schedule:

The fall 2024 regatta schedule is posted on the home page of NESSA Website

NORs will be posted as soon as they are received.  Those documents will describe the registration process.  In all case though a school must have paid their 2024-25 NESSA/ISSA Dues in order to register and compete.

[NESSA] Fall 2024 High School Sailing - F2

Welcome to the Fall 2024 High School Sailing season.

Here is the link to a document is being mailed out next week.  The ISSA/NESSA database portal is not open yet, but I will let you know when it is appropriate for schools to start updating their information and renewing their memberships.  Please note, there will be a late free ($25) attached to any dues paid after November 1st.

A. MEMBERSHIP: You have been sent this letter and invoice because your school had an active sailing program last year.  NESSA anticipates operating a full Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 season. Your continued support is appreciated.

In order to complete your school’s eligibility, please follow the directions below.

Go online and confirm the status of your school. https://nessa.hssailing.org/schools

  1. If status says “active”, then your school is all set for this year.

  2. If status is “pending,” this means that the on-line data has been updated but the dues check was not received.  Please fill out and sign the attached invoice and mail with an appropriate check to the address on the form or you can pay through the PayPal link on the website.

  3. If status is listed as “inactive,” this means that the on-line portion of registration has not been completed and the dues check has not been received.  Please:

    1. Log on to the “team registration” page and follow the directions.  https://registration.hssailing.org/

    2. Fill out and sign the attached invoice and mail with an appropriate check to the address on the form or you can pay through the PayPal link on the website.

Some follow up:

  • The best and quickest way to pay dues is through the NESSA PayPal Portal.

  • Dues and forms are being sent to Bottom Line Bookkeeping in Hyannis. This is the company that we started using nine years ago.  If you have a Centerville address or a Hyannis address in your files, those locations are no longer valid, and checks sent there will not be received.

  • If you need updated W-9 information, please e-mail and I will have the bookkeeper send you the appropriate documentation.

  • For the Fall, dues must be received prior to competing in any high school regattas.

  • For the Spring, dues must be received by November 1st.  Schools that do not pay dues by that date may be excluded from NESSA regattas including New England Championships and National qualifiers.

B. COMMUNICATION: Further communication from NESSA this year will come via e-mail and/or be posted on the NESSA website.  It is a membership requirement that at least one person from each program is on the list, but we encourage all athletic directors, student activity directors, coaches, advisors, sailors, and their parents to join the NESSA email list.

[NESSA] Spring 2024 High School Sailing - S16

As we roll to the end of the Spring 2024 High School sailing season, three things to consider.

  1. Mallory and Phebe King:  Both National regattas are finishing up today.  Follow the NESSA teams through Tech Score

    Mallory Results.                P King Results

  2. Tech Score: There are several regattas in Tech score that are not Finalized and/or missing Race Participation info.  Tech Score is ISSA's main platform to communicate about our sport to the outside world, so it is important that it "looks right" at the end of the day. If you hosted a regatta this year and used Tech Score, please make sure that your regattas are squared away.  Write your regatta summary.  Hit the finalized button.  Fill in the missing RP info.  If you didn't get all the names for the schools that participated, enter "No Show" in all the blank spaces.  If you want to penalize a school for not filling out their RP info, go ahead. Please get this done this week.

  3. NESSA ExComm Meeting on June 13th:  On the agenda are two main items.  One involves the date of the O'Day.  Given that the Mallory in in NESSA next year (most likely at Connecticut College), we have some flexibility.  Also on the agenda is a review of the Presidents and Terk Regattas format .  If you have thoughts on either item, please funnel them to President Chris Crane or your the League Representative.

O'Day at Conn College b/c the Mallory will be at Conn College.

    • Option 1:

      • Quals on Sat 5/10.

      • Finals on Sat May 24 - Sun May 25.

      • Mallory on 5/31 - 6/1

    • Option 2:

      • Quals on Sun 4/27.

      • Finals on Sat May 10 - Sun May 11.

      • Mallory on 5/31 - 6/1

              Presidents/Terk format review

2023: Presidents and Terk on the same weekend (fist weekend in May)

2024: Presidents on fist weekend in May, Terk on the third weekend in May,

For 2025, what do we want to do?

[NESSA] Spring 2024 High School Sailing - S15

Team Racing that went on this weekends.

Here in Oak Harbor, WA, both St George's and Hotchkiss battled hard.  It was great to see both NESSA teams in the final four and they represented our district well.

In Chicago, Tabor won the NIT. That is four wins in a row by a NESSA team.  Fairfield Ludlowe HS finished third and Barrington HS was 7th.  NESSA is slated to host the NIT in 2026.  More information about the bid process coming out in the fall.

And finally, it was reported to me that Terk was a great event.  Congratulations to Greenwich HS for winning the regatta in the final race, and to East Greenwich HS, Greens Farms Academy, and Martha's Vineyard RHS for rounding out the final four.

Here are the results:   Baker      NIT      Terk

Our focus turns to the Herreshoff  finals slated for Saturday May 25 at the Community Boating Center in New Bedford, MA.  Good luck to all the teams competing.

And finally, a tearful goodbye and good luck to all the seniors who are graduating in the next few weeks.  Whether you are going on to sail in college or not, we hope that you will look back fondly on your high school sailing years. And in the future, when you are able, you will give back to the sport.  Many of the umpires at the Terk were ex-HS sailors, ex-HS coaches, or present HS coaches whose teams were not competing.

[NESSA] Spring 2024 High School Sailing - S14

Lots of racing this past weekend.  Here are some highlights.

  1. Herreshoff: Congrats to the 17 girls teams that qualified for the Herreshoff finals at CBC New Bedford on Saturday May 25, 2024.  We assume that all the squads will attend, but if for some reason you need to drop out, please alert Herreshoff Event Chair Rob Russell (East Greenwich HS) and/or Jonathan Harley (NESSA VP) as soon as possible so that a replacement school can be found

  2. Fleet Racing.

    • O'Day: Congrats to St George's for winning the O'Day Trophy for the second year in a row.

    • Mallory: St George's, Hotchkiss, and Brunswick will represent NESSA at the Mallory in Charleston, SC June 1-2, 2024. Please  see the Regatta website for NOR and Registration details.

    • Phebe King: Furthermore, Portsmouth Abbey, Greenwich Academy, Barrington HS and Tabor Academy qualify to represent NESSA at the P King regatta.  NOR and Registration info can be found on the Regatta Website. Those schools have 36 hours to accept their bids by emailing Jonathan Harley.  Schools that finished 8th and below should be ready to respond if an open bid falls to you.

  3. Terk Trophy:  Final coaches' rankings are due tonight at 6 pm and invitations to the Terk will be sent out from Carl Zimba later this evening/first thing tomorrow morning.  Schools selected must be ready to accept or reject the bid at that time.  Schools on the list should be ready to respond if a bid falls to you.

[NESSA] Spring 2024 High School Sailing - S11

The O'Day qualifiers are next Sunday (4/28) in five locations around the district. Here is what you need to know.

  1. Regatta website:

    1. Your site assignment is listed on the second tab of the "entries" post.

    2. Schools listed in Green have met the requirements to compete.  School still listed in white have not.  Most likely, those in white have not crossed the "three meet/regatta" threshold yet.  If you represent one of those schools, please reach out to your League Representative for guidance.

    3. Three sites have activated their Tech Score pages. Two others are expected to be active in the next 24 hours,  That site will be your first choice for questions regarding next Sunday.  Please check for any special site specific information (parking, food, etc.) that may be posted for your site.

  2. Database and Tech Score.

    1. All of your sailors should be entered in the NESSA Database prior to the weekend, so that it has time to "shake hands" with the Tech Score Database.

    2. Your Tech Score account should already be active.  Questions concerning Tech Score are handled through the ISSA office located in California.  The office is not open on weekends, so if you wait until Saturday to troubleshoot, you will be out of luck.

    3. There are penalties for improper or missing Race Participation (RP) information that are outlined in the ISSA Procedural Rules.

  3. Withdrawal:

    1. The deadline to withdraw from this regatta without penalty is 0930 on Friday April 26th.

    2. Penalties for late withdrawal are listed in the NESSA District Rules (Article L)

    3. Schools are probation should pay careful heed to their obligations.  The up-to-date NESSA Probation List can be found here.

  4. Questions: Reach out to these people in this order.

    1. Individual Regatta Chairs

      • Hyannis, MA - Brent Jansen (Barnstable HS)

      • Groton, CT - Prescott, Littlefield (Williams School)

      • Briston, RI - Jonathan Harley (Portsmouth Abbey)

      • Quincy, MA - Patrick Broome (Milton Academy)

[NESSA] Spring 2024 High School Sailing - S10

Team Race results are flowing in.  Coaches, please check that the data for your team is correct . If you find a mistake, let me know. The first coach pool was submitted last night.  Karl will post it in the 2024 Rankings page when it is completed.

Coop Teams and 8th Graders:  In accordance with ISSA PR 1.2 (b) "All competitors must be full time students, in the 9th grade or higher, of the school they represent, and subject to the academic and disciplinary requirements of that school. A student is considered to be in his or her grade for the school year, including past graduation or advancement to the next level, until the new school year starts."

What does this mean:

  • For NESSA Fleet Racing Championships and qualifiers to NESSA championships (O'Day, Herreshoff, Healy), this rule is in place.

  • For NESSA Team Racing Championship (Presidents trophy) and NESSA Team Racing Tournament (Terk Trophy), this rule is in place.

  • The NESSA "gray area" involved dual meets that are used to establish a record for consideration to the NESSA Teams (Presidents and/or Terk).  The default is that this rule is in place.  However, each dual meet is an individual contract between the two schools.  If BOTH schools agree BEFOREHAND to change the rules and count the scores, they can.

  • Finally, those running their own regattas (where NESSA is not the OA) can establish whatever rules they want so long as those rules are announced beforehand, usually in a Notice of Race and/or Sailing Instructions

Hope this helps clarify the situation.

[NESSA Spring 2024 High School Sailing - S9}

Site Assignments for the O'Day and Herreshoff Trophies have been posted on the NESSA website.  If you go to the second tab on the "entries" spreadsheet, you will see the site that your school has been assigned.    Here are direct links:

A reminder about NESSA District Rules

  • Article K, section 2 (d): "Schools must sail at least three scheduled meets or regattas prior to the championship between two or more schools in the season that the championship is being held (fall or spring)."  Schools that have crossed this threshold are highlighted in Green on the site assignment page. Data is captured from the NESSA Team Racing Scores and Tech Score m- Spring 2024.  If there is data outside of these sources (FNL, PBR, etc.), please share it with me.  The goal is to get each school registered over this important safety threshold.

  • Article L - Failure to Compete: Schools have until 48 hours prior to the regatta report time to withdraw from a regatta penalty free.  Schools that withdraw within 48 hours are put on probation for two years.  School that violate this District Rule while on probation are barred from ALL NESSA REGATTA for the next year.  Here is a link to the current probation list from the homepage of the website.

  • Article M - Trophy Winner Responsibilities: The following schools are put on notice that they are responsible for bringing the NESSA trophy to the regatta. Consequences for failing to do such are outlined in the District Rules.

    • O'Day - St. George's School

    • Presidents - Brunswick School

    • Herreshoff - St. George's School

It will cover the basics. The umpire test will not be offered at the conclusion of the training. For those coaches who do a lot of team racing, this is an excellent opportunity to see what umpires are looking for so you can coach your team up better.

[NESSA] Spring 2024 High School Sailing - S1

Good morning NESSA,

1. NORs for the NESSA Regattas (O'Day & O'Day Qualifiers, Herreshoff & Herreshoff Qualifiers, Presidents, and Terk) have been posted on the schedule page of the NESSA website. Registration for those regattas will open at 0800 on March 1, 2024, and close at 2359 on April 1, 2024.

A few reminders as we head toward the spring season:

  • Schools must be NESSA Members to register for a NESSA regatta.  The status of all schools is posted on the Directory page of the website.
  • To complete all registrations, payment of regatta fees must be done through the NESSA PayPal portal
  • I did create an option that allows a school to pay for all three NESSA spring championships (O'Day, Teams consideration, and Herreshoff) at the same time. It should be "live" by Feb 1st.
  • To register for the NESSA Teams (Presidents and Terk), you only pay the $40 "consideration fee" at this time.  The attendance fee is billed later to those schools that actually attend the Presidents/Terk.
  • Schools may withdraw from a regatta at least 48 hours prior to the report time without penalty.
  • Inside of 48 hours, schools will be placed on probation in accordance with NESSA District Rule Section L.
  • A list of schools already on Probation can be found here.

2. NESSA Plans to host a ZOOM Meeting to walk through the regatta registration process, database management, Tech Score, and other portion of the District rules in February.  Stay Tuned for details.

3. Finally, if you no longer wish to receive these emails, instructions on how to remove yourself from the list are below.

[NESSA] Fall 2023 High School Sailing - S13

  1. Weekend Recap: Congrats to the six schools who ventured to King's Point this weekend for the Fall ACCs.  Sorry, there was not a lot of wind, but glad they were able to get off the minimal number of races to constitute a regatta.

  2. NESSA Annual Meeting was a good success.  There was good discussion surroundings several topics.  The Annual Meeting Minutes should be ready to post by the weekend.

  3. Want more sailing.  While most of NESSA is closing up and putting boats away, the NOR for the Rose Bowl Regatta was just posted.  Those interested in in traveling to Southern California in January should take a look.

[NESSA] Fall 2023 High School Sailing - S10

  1. Recap from the weekend. The weather delayed Arnold brown Regatta was won by St. Georges, which qualifies them for the 3rd NESSA berth at the Fall ACCs along with Barrington HS (Casco Bay Open) and The Brunswick School (NESSA Fall Funfest). NESSA's final berth will be decided at the Roy Williams Invitationals sailed at St George's this Sunday (10/22).

  2. Roy Williams Regatta: Roy Williams and I started our coaching careers in NESSA in the late 1980s.  Roy was out at the Kent School, taking over for the legendary Tim Scott, before moving to St George's in the early 1990s to take over for the legendary Steve Leslie. Roy coached SG to two Baker wins (2008 & 2016), several NE Team Racing (1998, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2014, 2015, 2016) and Fleet Racing (1998, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2017) Championships, and many more podium finishes in his 35+ year coaching career,  I always enjoyed the intense competition against Roy's teams as they often brought out the best in both teams..  A legion in his own right, Roy stepped away from coaching in June.  This regatta in his name is a wonderful acknowledgment of his contribution to the sport of High School Sailing not only on a national stage but in New England and at St George's too.

[NESSA] Fall 2023 High School Sailing - S9

  1. Recap from the weekend.

Congrats to the Brunswick School for winning the NESSA Fall Funfest (Gleekman Trophy) and earning the second NESSA berth at the Fall ACCs.  Barrington HS secured the first berth with its win at the Casco Bay Open in early September.  The final two berths will be distributed at the delayed Arnold Brown Regatta on Martha's Vineyard (Oct 14) and the Roy Williams Invitational at St. Georges (Oct 22).

  2. 7th and 8th graders:

One of the items on the ISSA Annual Meeting agenda this Friday is a discussion regarding 7th and 8th graders. For some historical context, when I first started coaching, 8th graders were allowed to compete in high school sailing so long as "the school had an 8th grade in the school."  (think Belmont Hill or Barnstable HS, but not a school where the 8th graders were in a different school building in the district). The board adjusted the threshold to its present language of "9th grader or higher" in the early 1990. Nationally, there has been a 7th & 8th graders creep into local regattas - not national regattas or national qualifiers - with different districts allowing different things at the district level.  The Board wants to codify expectations.  If you have thoughts on 7th and 9th graders, please feel free to share them with me before 0800 et on Friday.

  3. Membership: ISSA/NESSA dues are expected to increase in November.  To secure the lower rate, go online and confirm the status of your school. https://nessa.hssailing.org/schools

  • If status is “pending,” this means that the on-line data has been updated but the dues check was not received.  Please fill out and sign the attached invoice and mail with an appropriate check to the address on the form or you can pay through the PayPal link on the website.

1. Another Busy weekend in NESSA with more tropical weather.
2. Memberships are coming in.
  • We are up to 54 schools as of yesterday.
  • A reminder that dues are slated to increase in November.
  • If your school has not paid yet, not is the time to take advantage of the savings.
  • Scroll down & look for "membership" for details).
3. While setting up the Healy, I noticed how many schools have not updated their rosters yet.
  • ISSA PR 1.2 requires that those competing be on the roster.
  • An updated roster means those names will appear on Tech Score.
  • It is a requirement of the coaches to make sure that Race Participation information is entered properly into Tech Score at each regatta (ISSA PR 4.2).The penalty is pretty severe.
Reach out if you have any questions about the above.  The NESSA Officers (Chris, Johanthan, Andrew, Patrick, and I) are happy the helps.

  2. Regatta Fees:
    • There are schools who have not paid their NESSA regattas fees yet.  Fees are paid through the NESSA PayPal Portal
    • Schools that have not paid run the risk of being removed from the registration list to make room for schools on the wait list who have paid.
    • If you think I made a mistake (entirely possible), please let me know.

    • More info below.

  4. Hurricane Lee:
    • Track on Hurricane Lee has parts of NESSA in its sites with Cape Cod, the Islands, and the coast of Maine being officially in the "cone of uncertainty."
    • Whether we get a direct hit or a glancing blow, both Sail MV (Host for the Arnold Brown Regatta) and SailMaine (Host of the NBKI qualifiers) are vunerable.  Schools participating in the ABR and NKBIQ should look for the host sites for updates as we approach this weekend.

[NESSA} Fall 2023 High School Sailing - S4

1. Registration for Fall Regattas:

  • Registration for NESSA Regattas (FFF, GOR Quals, NKBI Quals, Healy) opened today at noon.
  • Regatta fees for these events should be paid through the NESSA PayPal Portal
  • Duxbury Fall Invite opens tomorrow at 0900
  • St George's Invite opens on Sept 11th.

2. Tech Score:
First fall regattas (Casco Bay Open) is this Saturday.  In order to compete, you need to have an active Tech Score account.  These can take 24 hours to set up.

  • Coaches are urged to check access to their account today.  I just checked mine and the system is working, although it did take me three attempts to get the username and password correct.
  • To ensure that all of your sailors are in Tech Score, they need to be in your school's ISSA/NESSA directory page. Please update those pages today too - this is where the 24-hour time lag occurs.
  • To do any of this, your school needs to be a 2023-2024 NESSA member. If your school is not listed as "active" on the Directory Page, you are not a member and therefore ineligible for competition yet.

So, coaches, advisors, parents and friends. There is a lot of do to stand up your program for the season. Today is the day to act; Friday evening may be too late.

3.  PCISA Girls Regatta:
For those who are interested in attending the PCISA Girls Invite, the NOR is attached. NESSA has three berths that we need to commit to by 1700 PDT Monday, September 18, 2023

[NESSA] Fall 2023 High School Sailing - S1

Welcome to the Fall 2023 High School Sailing season.

The attached document is being mailed out this week.  Some of you have discovered that the ISSA/NESSA database portal is open. Schools are free to start updating their information and renewing their memberships.  Please note, the dues will be going up after the annual meeting, so plan accordingly.

A. MEMBERSHIP: You have been sent this letter and invoice because your school had an active sailing program last year.  NESSA anticipates operating a full Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 season.

This is the company that we started using eight years ago.

  • For the Spring, dues must be received by our Annual Meeting.  Schools that do not pay dues by that date may be excluded from NESSA regattas including New England Championships and National qualifiers. Furthermore, there is an anticipated dues increase starting in November.  To take advantage of the past year’s pricing, dues must be received before the Annual Meeting.

B. COMMUNICATION:

Further communication from NESSA this year will come via e-mail and/or be posted on the NESSA website.  It is a membership requirement that at least one person from each program is on the list, but we encourage all athletic directors, student activity directors, coaches, advisors, sailors, and their parents to join the NESSA email list.

MISSA Fall Qualifiers

Fall Qualifiers Summary

Great Lakes Championship is MISSA's overall fall district championship, in high school sailing's default format: two-division doublehanded dinghy racing. Great Lakes will be at Chicago Yacht Club's Belmont Harbor location on October 21-22. This is earlier that in past years because we wanted the event to also be MISSA's qualifier for the Atlantic Coast Championship, allowing us to ensure that we send our best teams to represent the district. (Last year, some of our top teams were put in the unfortunate position of having to choose between the two events.)

Great Lakes Qualifiers There are twenty spots at the Great Lakes Champs and eighteen berths to the MISSA Shepherd Championship and these are awarded at a series of qualifying regattas. There are two rounds of qualifiers - the first round are "closed" league qualifiers - each League (West, Central, and East) has four berths to award at these qualifiers which are only open to teams from that League. So for example, a team from Central could not go to the West Qualifier. Note that the East League splits these four berths between an Ohio Qualifier and a Michigan Qualifier.  The second round consists of two "open" qualifiers, which any team from any league may attend. There are four berths awarded at each of the two open qualifiers, which are sometimes referred to as "last chance" qualifiers.

MISSA Cressy Qualifier, hosted by Lake Forest on September 16-17, is our district's singlehanded championship and is the qualifier for the Cressy National Singlehanded Championship, which will be in New Orleans October 28-29.  NEW THIS YEAR: At both Cressy Nationals and the MISSA Cressy Qualifier, there will be separate Girls ILCA6 and Boys ILCA6 fleets, in addition to an Open ILCA7 fleet. The top two sailors in each of these three fleets will advance to nationals.

MISSA Girls Championship is taking place September 23-24 at Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. This is a qualifier for the ISSA Girls National Invitational in San Diego on October 14-15, to which MISSA expects to have four berths. This is two-division double-handed event, and all competitors must be girls.

MISSA Great Oaks Qualifier is specifically geared toward developing teams. Unlike most high school regattas, it is a single-division regatta meaning that you only need one skipper and one crew to participate. Schools that have gone to Mallory or Baker nationals in the last four years may not compete in Great Oaks events. This year’s qualifier is September 23-24 at Pontiac Yacht Club near Detroit. Great Oaks Nationals is November 18-19 in New Orleans. We don't yet have a confirmation of how many berths MISSA has, but will share this when we find out.

MISSA Keelboat Qualifier this year will be held at Bayview Yacht Club in Michigan on October 7-8. The winner of the regatta moves on the National High School Keelboat Invitational in St. Petersburg, Florida on December 9-10.

Registration Deadlines for Qualifiers and Championships are firm. Schools missing the registration deadlines will not be allowed to compete. Please read make sure your team is registered on time. In general, NORs should be posted at least 30 days before the regatta, and registration links and deadlines will be in the NORs.  Also, your team has to be registered and ISSA/MISSA dues received in order to be eligible to register and compete, so please make sure you complete the registration process.

2023-4 MISSA Welcome Message

MISSA MAILING LIST - ADD YOUR NEW PEOPLE
If you are getting this email, you are on our list! Please forward this message to anyone you think should be on our list, especially any new coaches or team leaders. I know many of our programs have a lot of new faces in the last year or so. Anyone may add themselves to the distribution list for future emails here: tinyurl.com/missa-mail. (And if you want to stop getting these, please just use the unsubscribe link at the bottom.)

COMMUNICATIONS
A few years ago, we shifted more of the responsibility for communication and scheduling to the League level. For those who don't know, MISSA is made of three leagues -West (MN/WI), Central (IL/IN) and East (MI/OH). Each League should have an active League Committee that coordinates scheduling and communication within that area. This has been working better in some areas than in other, and our goal for this year is to get a strong, active, and proactive League Committee in each area.

At the same time, we intend to work to improve communications from the MISSA District Committee. Several areas of improvement (website, scheduling visibility, social media presence) have been pointed out over the summer and we are working to address those. Meanwhile, you can all expect weekly updates through this mailing list. Please stay tuned.

Regrettably, we ended up not having an annual district meeting last school year. Under our new structure, these should take place in the spring. This year we will hold district wide meetings in both the fall and the spring and allow attendance by zoom. The fall meeting will be the weekend of Great Lakes Championships. Look for an official announcement next month.

FALL SCHEDULE
The official MISSA schedule is on our website. We are still looking for a host for a second Open Great Lakes Qualifier the weekend of October 14-15. If you can host a Tier 2 that weekend, please step forward! Look for another email later this week with some additional important information about fall qualifiers and looking for hosts for some spring events.

We would really like to see more local regattas scheduled, so if you are thinking of hosting, please let us know. (Our unofficial draft planning schedule is always visible at tinyurl.com/MISSA-schedule, but until we get NORs from the hosts, it isn't official.)

TEAM REGISTRATION
Team registration opened August 1, and many of our teams have registered, but if you haven't, please do so right away at registration.hssailing.org. If you are new to the process, start by looking at the MISSA Team Admin Manual. It gives step-by-step instructions for getting your team info updated on both the ISSA registration page and TechScore.

DUES
MISSA Dues of $125 per team can be paid via the PayPal link on the registration site. The dues cover the entire school year, not just the fall season. We lowered dues to $125 (the lowest of any district in ISSA) in 2016 and have not raised them since.  Schools that have only one or two sailors and will not participate in any qualifiers may use the dropdown menu to select the reduced dues of $100 per MISSA Rules 2.3.

ISSA President Tim Hogan to be Inducted into Sailing Hall of Fame

Full article

When you talk with Tim Hogan, he will tell you one of his greatest accomplishments is helping his four children become top sailors.  He told the Los Angeles Times, “I think the best thing about sailing for me has been watching my four children (Casey, Patrick, Matthew, Scott) enjoy the sport as much as I did.”

Since 2005 he has been President of the Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA). In the process he has become the champion of building interscholastic sailing in the United States.  Hogan and his Board virtually doubled the roster of teams over the past twenty years from about 330 until at the end of 2022 there were 626 high schools with competitive sailing teams.  Many of the high school sailors go on to compete in intercollegiate sailing.  These young sailors spend their future lives racing and spending time on the water.  Hogan has made a vital contribution to sailing in this country.  Tim says, “My initial inspiration for growing high school sailing was my four kids.  It quickly became apparent that this was an incredible opportunity to grow youth sailing.

Tim Hogan grew up in Newport Beach, California.   He improved his sailing skills as a youngster racing the popular Snowbirds and Sabots out of the Newport Harbor Yacht Club.  He went on to University of Southern California and was a three-time All American sailor.  His team, including Argyle Campbell, Susan Barneson and Cynthia (Cece) Cotton, won the Intercollegiate North American Championship in 1970 in a highly competitive regatta in Madison, Wisconsin.   Hogan was named College Sailor of the Year in 1969.  In 1970 he won B Division at the nationals.

Professionally, Hogan has had a long career in real estate in Southern California. He was president of Warmington Homes and continues to consult on real estate projects.  He has been successful racing offshore yachts taking Line Honors in the 1969 Trans-Atlantic Race aboard Kialoa II.  He was a podium finisher in the Congressional Cup and won the 1972 US Match Racing Championship.   In 1985 he became Chair of the California Interscholastic Sailing Association (CISA).   During his time as Chair, Roy Disney, made a substantial contribution that helped build an important training facility in Long Beach, California.  CISA hosts an annual racing clinic that attracts the top coaches and aspiring young sailors from around the country.  An impressive roster of CISA participants have gone on to race in the Olympic Games and win many World Championships.

Hogan’s contributions to the sport of sailing, both on the water and off, have had a significant impact on the lives of countless young people who have discovered their love for sailing under his leadership.

Directions to all three locations were added to the NESSA Schedule page today.

Remember, this is a NESSA championship, so

Good Luck to all who are competing.

Spring 2023 High School Sailing - S10

A busy weekend of high school sailing is coming up. Brunswick and Hotchkiss are headed to Minnesota to represent NESSA at the Baker.  St. George's, Tabor, East Greenwich, and Greenwich HS head to Sharon where the Eagles will play host to schools from MASSA, MISSA, and NWISA at this weekend's NIT regatta.  And many leagues are holding events this weekend too. Good luck to all who are competing.

As a reminder, if you are using Tech Score for a regatta, and we want you to use Tech Score for all of your regattas,  please be aware of the following:

  1. As host, it is your responsibility to make sure that all schools enter their Regatta Participation (RP) information fully and accurately.  Check the "Missing RP" tab before you let any school leave and help anyone who has not entered the data correctly do so properly.  This becomes cumbersome if you have non-member teams competing, but you can get it done.  If someone leaves without doing the RP info properly, unput the "no show" option for any missing person and assign them penalty points.
  2. As host, it is your responsibility to "finalize" the regatta.  That means, all scores posted, a summary is written, and all RP info is entered.  Then click the button. Ideally this should be done when the regatta is over, but definitely within 24 hours.

  3. Finally, if you started a regatta in Tech Score but end up not using it, delete the regatta.

Today there are 9 regattas that are "pending" (They have not been finalized), five that are "missing RP info", two with "no finishes" and 13 "teed up" and ready to roll in the next 6 days.  Please make sure that you do your part to clean up the system by the end of the season (June 1st).

Thanks.

  1. O'Day qualifying sites have been posted since April 7th.  Please double check the list so that you show up in the right place on Saturday. (If your school is listed in Green, you are all set at attend).

  3. In accordance with Article M of the NESSA District rules, Brunswick School is responsible for bringing the trophy.

  4. Tech Score will be used at all sites this weekend to post results, race notices (like the SIs) and enter RP data.  Coaches, please make sure your Tech Score account works BEFORE arriving to the regatta site on Saturday.  Furthermore, make sure your school's database is up to date before Friday, so that all of the names appear on Tech Score.  Saturday will be too late and there are penalties for not complying.

The forecast for the weekend looks good.  Good luck to all the schools.
