The High School Doublehanded Championship brought together 20 schools from across the USA to compete in San Diego Bay on May 10-11. With the venue just off the B Street Pier, and team compounds perched on the edge over the course, it proved to be an epic venue for both sailors and spectators.
The 11-race regatta, sailed in Club Flying Juniors, ended in dramatic fashion. It could not have been any closer. Sharing the details and emotions of the moment is Steve Hunt, coach of the winning Point Loma High School team…
Besides honoring the most important women in the world, SDYC observed another Mother’s Day tradition in May by hosting the High School Doublehanded National Championship. The top twenty teams from around the country assembled to vie for ISSA’s coveted Mallory Trophy, setting the stage for a dramatic weekend. Utilizing SDYC’s regionally unrivaled fleet of 24 CFJ dinghies and the ultra-spectator-friendly Cityfront venue; sailors, coaches, and fans were treated to breezy conditions and a nail-biter finish! Congratulation to the Point Loma High School Pointers, who rallied on Sunday to win by one point, capturing their sixth National title!
High School Sailing (Interscholastic Sailing Association – ISSA) kicks off the Championship sailing season with the Mallory Championship, in San Diego, CA this coming weekend, May 10-11. The Mallory Trophy, dedicated in 1930, will determine the best of fleet racing among the 7 Districts represented by 20 schools across the USA. The best High School sailors will descend upon San Diego Yacht Club with the racing to be held off the city front with spectacular viewing from the Embarcadero.
As referenced in ISSA’s Basic Guide for Safety Practices which is posted on the ISSA website under Safety Practices, High School Sailing recommends that all competitors to be safety conscious.
