The University of South Florida St. Petersburg hosted the 2012 SAISA Great Oaks Qualifying Regatta October 20, 2012. Sixteen teams competed, from as
far away as the USVI, Bahamas, and both North and South Carolina.
The day started with a pleasant northeasterly, and the first 13 races were completed by 3pm. The breeze died, however, filling from every direction but the predicted northwesterly for the next hour. Finally the breeze returned, and the last 3 races were were sailed by 5:45. The winning team was local, Lakewood HS, from St. Petersburg.
All courses were W-L's, with windward offsets and leeward gates. There were numerous general recalls, no breakdowns, and no protests filed. The top 9 team advance to the Great Oaks Regatta in New Orleans.
Thank you to all the teams participating, to the USFSP Waterfront, the USF sailing team members who assisted, and to Tom and Karen Monkus for their continued enthusiastic support of HS sailing!
